New CT1000S AC-DC split -core current sensor: the new flexible option for high-performance power measurement systems
by Yokogawa Test&Measurement June 6, 2024We live in an increasingly electrified world. Electric cars in place of the combustion engine, solar panels and wind turbines replacing fossil fuel-burning power stations. In industry, in transportation, and in the home, high-power electrical systems are becoming the norm.
This is bringing the need for power measurement and waveform analysis to the fore in industry sectors ranging from energy generation, distribution and storage to automotive design and manufacturing, transportation, factory automation, and electric motors and drives. More than ever, developers and manufacturers of electrical equipment require systems that can accurately capture current and energy measurements at high speed to enable detailed power analysis and waveform generation.
This is the context for the launch of the latest current sensor from Yokogawa, the CT1000S. Featuring bandwidth of 300 kHz – the industry’s highest for this class of instrument – the CT1000S provides the high-speed operation necessary for power measurements in fast-switching inverters. This makes it ideal for use in applications such as motor drives, electric vehicle testing, and wind turbines.
The CT1000S also introduces another valuable feature for use in the laboratory or on the production line. It is a split-core current sensor: the main measurement unit swings open on a hinge to allow the cable under measurement to be inserted without needing to be cut or disturbed. The unit can easily be locked in place with its blue locking lever.
The CT1000S is equipped with a conductor position adapter: this secures the cable under measurement and minimizes vibration or other movement which can increase measurement error. Use of the adapter can cut the influence of conductor location in half, to ≤0.1%. This increases the reproducibility of measurements, producing more reliable and repeatable series of measurements over time.
When using the adapter, the CT1000S accepts conductors with an outer diameter of up to 30 mm. Without the adapter, the maximum outer diameter is 50 mm.
The CT1000S also features advanced shielding technology which gives very high immunity to magnetic interference. The unit’s high noise immunity makes it ideal for use in industrial and other environments that contain noisy devices such as inverters, motors, and high-voltage cables.
When paired with any of Yokogawa’s wide range of test and measurement instruments, such as the WT5000 Precision Power Analyzer, the DL950 ScopeCorder or one of its oscilloscopes, the CT1000S produces accurate and repeatable current and power measurements and waveform observations over a wide full-scale range up to 1000 A. The sensor can be powered directly by the instrument when equipped with a probe power supply.
The CT1000S offers accuracy of ±0.2 % of reading, with an output ratio of 2 mV/A. Typical non-linearity error is ±20 ppm. Phase correction applied to the sensor’s outputs limits phase error to ±0.1 ° at up to 10 kHz, and ±5.0 ° at up to 100 kHz.
So now, test and power engineers have a new option for the current measurements used in precision power analysis: the CT1000S offers accurate current sensor outputs and a fast and easy measurement set-up.
